““Industrialisation – birth”
Scene 1/6
“The beginning of the industrialisation of Novi Sad and the establishment of the first factory, which turned the small town into a city…”
I have decided to paint a machine that will show main principles of industrialization- automatisation, repetition and lack of manpower
As part of the 6th edition of Kaleidoskop kulture, the biggest gathering of contemporary arts in the Western Balkans, within the first week of September, together with Pablo Astrain and Natasa Konjevic, I got the opportunity to paint a mural done on the facade of the longest building in District, a new urban hub and a centre for contemporary art and creativity in Novi Sad, European Capital of Culture for 2022. This year’s theme of Kaleidoskop was „Unbreakable bonds“ (Neraskidive veze) and the idea, following this theme, was to portray the development of District since its birth, which happened exactly 100 years ago.
There were six distinctive phases of its transformation, each represented on the wall based on the different topic that we were given by the curator of the project Monika Ponjavić. Finding a way to visually connect these 6 images into one ongoing story was the biggest challenge. We decided to split the walls into two parts – “Life of the Factory – Glory and Ruin” on the left side and “Transition to creative hub” on the right side. Two walls that I have painted (1/6 and 4/6) were positioned on the left side of the building.”
