Scene reenactments of any kind always come with a certain challenge; the format, the colors and the elements that are included have a different reading in each one of us.
This is the first time that I don’t include letters in a mural and it has been quite a temptation to solve the spaces with them, but I’m at a point where I want to continue growing and experimenting, and it seemed like a good opportunity to do so. The geometric shapes were quite difficult, I studied graphic design and I always really liked technical drawing, but I hadn’t put it into practice for years, the poses and clothes of both women are not what I usually paint and since I didn’t have the exact tones in Spray I have had to mix until I can complete the entire figure (becoming an intense course of mixing spray).
I focused all the work on getting out of my range of colors, high contrasts, the use of black and effects and I have been quite satisfied with the result.
The mural has been created for the “Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes” in collaboration with the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and Galeria de Arte Urbana who made an open call for this project. The mural alludes to the meeting between Maria and Isabel after the annunciation and the rest of the elements are arranged to represent the city of Lisbon with tiles inspired by the Wind Rose and a ship, in accordance not only with the name of the place but also to the identity of the city.
