“In the heart of the Nochi Art District, a vivid mural by A-KILL presents a commentary on the intricate labour dynamics of the local colony.
The scene captures the hands of fishermen, intently engaged in the painstaking work of mending their nets. A seamless narrative transition shifts the viewer’s attention to the women of the community, whose hands are depicted selling the day’s fresh catch.
The artist highlights the symbiotic relationship between these two integral processes of the local economy by a play in form. The nets imperceptibly transform into a chattai (a traditional woven carpet), serving as a metaphor for the community’s dependence on the sea, and on one another.
The mural crystallises the idea of an unwavering community that persists in its cyclical tasks of mending, selling, and moving forward, despite the circumstances. A-Kill’s mural seeks to immortalise the enduring spirit of a people united in labour and shared reliance.”
