“Mural painted in Rive, a small rural town south of Vercelli (Italy), whose territory is mainly occupied by rice fields. The mural represents three ‘mondine’, the seasonal workers in the rice fields.
The work of the ‘monda’ consisted of standing for entire days in water up to the knees with bare feet and with a bent back to remove the weeds that grew in the rice fields. It was a very tiring job, practiced above all by women from low social backgrounds whose working conditions were terrible. Today the role of weeders is played by herbicides.”
