This mural tackles the big topic of climate change from the perspective of education. The intertwining composition and focal point of the earth illustrate how everything we learn and do is connected to our climate. The stairs leading to and from the books and laptop symbolise learning and applying knowledge and skills. Their school motto ‘reach for the stars’ is embodied along the twisting road of our individual and collective journeys.
Together, all of the native flora and fauna signify a connection with the Kaurna People as the traditional custodians of the land. The birds represent our airways and the dolphin in the ocean symbolise our waterways. A real Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo often flies by the mural and the Plovers are friends of local Plover ‘Larry’ who inhabits the school oval. The gum tree branches and gum nuts mirror those on the campus.
Overall, this composition seeks to put our climate at the forefront of our minds to inspire us; the change makers of the future, to protect our earth as part of the Create4Adelaide project with Adelaide Festival.
I ran a program designing and painting with 150 Year 7 – 12 Students. It took us 10 days to paint this mural and was exciting working with students on the platform.
