“The school has students from many nationalities with a large Polish and Ukrainian population, with a direct provision centre in the local area. I talked with the vice principal about the different journeys students have taken to get to the school and It was great to see a strong community spirit within the school.
I ran a workshop with the TY’s and asked the students to create symbols that represented themselves, their community and the school. I also explored abstract forms with students who didn’t feel like expressing themselves through symbols. The image of Clara Mountain which overlooks the school was an image a few students drew which they felt represented the area and I incorporated this into the mural. I added in other drawings the students made on top of forms i painted.
I also added the Irish words “Pobail”(community) and “Turas”(journey) in Ogham writing to the end of each mural. There is an Ogham stone on display in the school, one of two found in the local area. (Ogham is the earliest known form of writing in Ireland, it dates back to around the 4th century A.D.)”
