Sharing with you one of our latest #bigartbiggerchange murals just completed by artist Mantra in downtown Houston as part of season 3 there.
The mural named “The Houston Collection” is about the butterfly effect. It is about how the world is interconnected and how small decisions can greatly impact people, society, and the planet. Yet, it also shows how “a butterfly flapping its wings,” or simply the right action at the right place, can make a huge difference.
The mural addresses social and environmental issues such as habitat fragmentation and climate change. As such, this mural represents all 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
It features eight emblematic butterflies from Texas and Houston showcased in a large entomologist box. These colorful, diverse butterflies are a tribute to the beauty of local nature and biodiversity and serve an educational purpose for the public as these local species are depicted with precision. From top to bottom you can admire: Danaus Plexippus (Monarch), Adelpha Fessonia (Mexican sister), Myscella Ethusa (Blue wing), Ascia Monuste (Great southern white), Doxocopa Pavon (Pavon), Phoebis Sennae (Cloudless giant sulphur), Doxocopa Laure (Laure) and Marpesia Petreus (Ruddy daggerwing).
Their representation in an entomologist box is also a vivid reminder of their fragility to climate change.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Big Art Bigger Change Murals is an unprecedented series of now 44 large murals curated by Street Art for Mankind and created by prominent international and local artists to amplify social and environmental justice in Houston and beyond, and to beautify and redynamize the Downtown and make it “The New Street Art Destination”.
The themes chosen for each mural are inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the diversity of the local community and the drive of local people and organizations who make a difference in Houston and around the world.
The series was made possible thanks to a partnership with Downtown Houston and Harris County. It was also supported by the City of Houston and TotalEnergies.
