I’m pleased to share ‘Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow’, my latest artwork created at the invitation of the Municipality of La Spezia at the entrance of the former Quintino Sella Air-Raid Shelter. This site, historically significant as a refuge during World War II, has been thoughtfully transformed into a gallery that now serves to explore and reflect the city’s historical narrative. In this piece, I employed anamorphosis to portray the face of a smiling child across the corridor walls, engaging directly with viewers. This technique not only enhances the dynamic effect, making it seem as if the face moves to follow the viewer, but it also fills the surrounding walls with radiant celestial light, creating a space where emptiness is rich with meaning. The transformed walls actively enhance the viewing experience, directing visitors’ attention towards the timeless symbol of the child, positioned above the entrance in the darkest point. This symbol, representing all generations, evokes peace, purity, and openness, projecting a hopeful vision for the future. ‘Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow’ engages deeply with its setting, adding a new layer of narrative and turning the entrance of the shelter into a bridge connecting past and future. It offers an immersive experience that invites reflection on our historical heritage and our aspirations for the future. I’d like to thank Mayor Pierluigi Peracchini for supporting this artistic endeavor, Dr. Rosanna Ghirri, Andrea Marmori, director of the Civic Museum Amedeo Lia, Emanuele Martera for the creative direction, and Silvia Ferrari for handling communications. Special thanks to Dr. Anna Costantini for facilitating our community engagement at the municipal Media Library, the numerous students from Cardarelli Artistic High School, and the children who participated in workshops at the Civic Museum “Amedeo Lia.”
