“Traditional masks adorn the background, reminiscent of cultural motifs yet reimagined with modern sensibilities. And at the heart of it all is Case’s version of Ensor’s self-portrait, rendered in photorealistic detail and topped with his signature ‘carnival is canceled’ face paint.
“However dark Ensor’s themes, his pictures are full of pearlescent colour and light. This nougat palette gives the paintings a visionary intensity.“”

The Crystal Ship Oostende is curated by All About Things and was this year co-curated by Carlo McCormick (US), renowned cultural critic, curator, authority on contemporary art and a lifelong enthusiast of James Ensor.”
