“Greenville County school district commemorated the 50-year anniversary of integration of the school district on February 17, 2020 while I happened to be researching a painting in the city.
These kind of coincidences I take as signs, a guide to connecting stories with place. Along this path I met Pearlie Harris – the First African American teacher who taught in white schools prior to desegregation in 1970. A generation of Greenville leaders where touched by this story. I met a few of them along the way and collected photographs and interviews together with local artist Adam Schrimmer.
I completed the mural later that year over six crazy weeks of work in August 2020.”
