Xu Zhen – From Eternity series – Northern Qi painted Bodhisattva, River God Ilissos from West Pediment of Parthenon, 2018. Mineral based composite, mineral pigments, stainless steel, marble. Xu Zhen’s ‘Eternity’ is a series of sculptural installations composed of replicas made from compound minerals. To create the amalgamations, the artist selects from classic statues of Western and Asian civilizations, like that of Buddha statues sourced from temples across China. The artist has taken a provocative but also humorous approach to highlight the differences in Western and Eastern cultures. The sculptures of the Greek Gods mark the beginning of Western civilization while the statues of Buddha represent enlightenment in it’s highest form. The migration of these timeless art pieces recount the history of colonization, international politics and war. By combining the two aesthetically and culturally opposing elements, Zhen brings cultural conflict and the power struggle of human history to the foreground.
