All that’s left of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Jesus in Torrijos, is just a few stones.
Santa Maria de Jesus was identical to San Juan de Los Reyes, same architect, same architectural structure, same area, same historical period. Yet today, five hundred years later, the first one, thanks to the contribution of Napoleonic troops, lies in ruins, invisible to the eyes of passers-by, the other one, luckier, soars over Toledo’s skyline and is admired by people from all over the world.
All that’s let of Teresa Enriquez, the founder of Santa Maria de Jesus, is just some blurred memories.
Teresa Enriquez was a noble, rich and beautiful woman and is mainly remembered for her religious commitments, but she was also a patron for artists, a philanthropist, she built the first public hospital in Spain, she took care of poor children’s education and funded support structures for women. When she died she was buried next to her husband, in a sepulchre inside Santa Maria de Jesus, that was later moved after the monastery’s destruction.
Some memories are destined to fade sooner than others.
Some loves are destined to end sooner than others.
Some buildings are meant to collapse sooner than others.
As time goes by, some things are destined to come back before your eyes, to be looked at in new shapes, like echoes in an empty room, like reflections in a broken mirror.
